At National Energy Direct, we fully understand that moving house is one of the most stressful tasks in life, and amid all the things to keep track of and consider, a serious matter like utilities could potentially slip the mind - and naturally you don’t want anything like this to detriment or confuse the moving process.

That’s why we have curated this one stop shop of a utilities checklist to consider and complete when moving property.

Proactivity

The utilities checklist begins while you still reside in your current occupancy, that’s because proactive planning is far more effective than reactive panicking, as this allows you to create a clear strategy on how best to go about the situation of a utilities switchover.

It’s wise to inform your current utility suppliers that you are intending to move property in advance of the actual move day itself, however do not do this too early as you could be charged with early cancellation fees.

We advise carrying this out at least 2 full working days before the move date, this gives sufficient time for your final bill as pertaining to the current property to arrive without a hitch. This can be especially beneficial if you are planning to transfer your existing tariff with your current energy supplier to your new property.

It’s also very important whilst at your current residency to take final meter readings on the day you are leaving, this can ensure an accurate final bill and stops you being charged for energy the new residents may use upon moving in.

Water

In the vast majority of cases your water supplier is pre determined simply by the geographical area you live in/are moving into, water bills consist of two charges, the first for the water you use, and the second for the treatment of sewage/wastewater.

You must contact your water supplier for your current address and inform them of the move, providing the date and any final meter readings, again as to avoid unnecessary charges.

Next you must contact the area’s local water suppliers (if this differs from previous supplier) for your new address and create an account with them, choosing to keep a meter installed by previous occupants or agreeing a new fixed term water usage payment plan (or vice versa).

Water Meters

A water meter should be a considered addition to the home, a property owner must carry out their research and due diligence in terms of whether their home would benefit from having a meter installed. Proactively study and assess your current utility bills and speak to your water provider before committing to a meter installation.

At National Energy direct we are qualified and licensed to carry out all utility meter installations and removals, including water.

Gas and Electricity

it’s again prudent to let your energy suppliers know in advance you are moving and provide them with relevant readings and information, if you aren't sure who about this is here’s what to do -

How To Find Out Who Supplies Your Energy

There are several easy ways to find out who your home’s energy supplier is. For gas specific enquiries, if you have a gas meter you can contact the Meter Point Administration service and they will inform you who your supplier is as well as your Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN).

For electricity supply enquiries, you can contact your energy distributors via the Energy Network Association. Your distribution company will then inform you who your energy supplier is as well as your Meter Point Administration Number (MPAN).

In terms of moving into your new property, you should take and send meter readings to your new (or continued) energy suppliers to avoid mischarge for the previous residents' usage.

If there is a prepayment meter in your new property, you need to contact your new energy supply company and make sure all the prior debts are cleared off from past occupancy before your bills begin to take effect.
